1940-1946 studied at Harrow School of Art.

1948 -1951 studied at the Royal College of Art.

1951 awarded the Bronze Medal for Painting.

1951 started teaching part-time at St Alban's Art School.

1952 First solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils, London.

1953 designed the stage set and costumes for 'A Mirror of Witches' produced by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden.

1953 Solo exhibition at Roland, Browse and Delbanco, followed by biennial exhibitions.

1954 Commissioned to paint mural for Broad Lane Comprehensive School, Coventry (Now The Woodlands School and Sports College).

1955 designed the stage set for Sadler’s Wells production of Saudades at Covent Garden.

1962-1970  Head of Painting at Manchester College of Art.

1967 Elected ARA.

1967 Commissioned by the Oxford University Press to illustrate parts of the Old Testament.

1971 murals for St Anselm’s Church, Kennington, London.

1972 Elected an RA.

1973-1976 visiting tutor at Leeds University.

1975 Stations of the Cross for the Church of Our Lady, Coffee Hall, Milton Keynes.

1981-1986 Professor of Painting at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

1986-1995 elected Keeper of the Royal Academy.

1987 Elected Honorary Member of the Royal Watercolor Society.

1988 retrospective held in the Diploma Galleries at the Royal Academy

1995 Fourteen Stations of the Cross, this time in oils, for St Mary’s Church, Mulberry Street, Manchester.

1995 appointed the Academy’s Professor of Painting.

2002 75th birthday exhibition of his work in the Friends’ Room at the Royal Academy.

2003 Drawing Prize at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

2004 Turner Prize at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

2005 Died on 9th March.
